2013 Inc. 500 / 5000 Defense Contractors

The 2013 Inc. 5000 did not break out defense contractors separately, so I did. Here you go.

2013 Inc. 5000 Defense Contractors

Amidst declining defense budgets and sequestration, the number of defense contractors on the 2013 Inc. 5000 declined -25%, from 126 to 94. Just less than half the defense contractors on last year's list remained (56). There are 38 defense contractors new to the list.

Here is how Inc. compiles their ranking:

The 2013 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2009 through 2012. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2009. Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2012. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.)The minimum revenue required for 2009 is $100,000; the minimum for 2012 is $2 million.

Since a defense contractor’s website is one of its most important marketing assets, I ran each of the 2013 Inc. 500 / 5000 defense contractor websites through Marketing Grader. This free tool analyzes a website based on the 3 pillars of inbound marketing: 1) getting found online,  2) converting visitors to leads, and 3) measuring effectiveness.

Marketing Grader is a “tough grader.” A score in the 80′s is very good (the high score on this list is Cask with 72%). And if your site’s score is low, there are a number of things that can be done to improve it in a relatively short period of time. In fact, when you run your own site through Marketing Grader, a comprehensive report is generated outlining how to improve your site’s marketing effectiveness.

One of the best things a defense contractor can do to improve their marketing effectiveness is to have a company blog with content that is of interest to the people they need to reach to make a sale. Here is a recent article about the benefits of blogging for defense contractors:

Why Defense Contractors Can’t Afford Not to Have a Blog

Now, on to the list.

The list below is based on each company’s profile on the 2013 Inc.5000 companies operating in the Government Services industry. Companies were included here if their profile mentioned serving the Department of Defense.  If you know of a defense contractor on the Inc. 5000, but not listed below, please post a comment or contact me.
