Inc. 500 / 5000 Defense Contractors

Posted by douglasburdett

The most recent Inc. 500 / 5000 did not list defense contractors separately. No problem - here's the list.

Despite the stagnant economy, the median growth rate of all 2011 Inc. 500|5000 companies remained an impressive 94 percent. The companies on this year’s list reported aggregate revenue up +14 percent.

Here is how Inc. compiles their ranking:

The 2011 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2007 through 2010. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2007.

Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2010. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.)

The minimum revenue required for 2007 is $100,000; the minimum for 2010 is $2 million.

Is your company eligible but not on the list? Getting listed on the Inc. 500 / 5000 is a great marketing opportunity for defense contractors. Making the list can significantly raise the awareness and stature of your firm, and help to attract top talent and contract partners.  To apply for the 2012 Inc. 500 / 5000 List, click here. The deadline is April 30, 2012.

In previous years, the Inc. 500 / 5000 list included a separate list of defense contractors.  This year, defense contractors were included in the larger subcategory of "Government Services." That category was #2 amongst all categories, up +141%.

#1 on the Government Services list was a defense contractor, Crystal Clear Technologies:

Crystal Clear Technologies sells communications and technology systems to the Department of Defense.

In 2002, after two and a half years as a logistics specialist for the Air Force, Crystal Culbertson went out on her own. She launched Crystal Clear Technologies, a consultancy, to help the military streamline its procurement processes. The company has since evolved into a seller of communications and technology systems to the Department of Defense.

Culbertson prides herself on the company's ability to fulfill complex contracts under pressure. That commitment was sorely tested in March, when Crystal Clear sent eight employees to Japan to install a secure broadband network at Kadena Air Base, near Okinawa. The company had $1 million of supplies en route to the base just as the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit the country. Through coordination with port officials, Culbertson and her staff were able to locate the supplies and complete the installation on schedule.

The list below is based on each company's profile on the 500 / 5000 list. Companies were included here if their profile mentioned serving the Department of Defense or the military.  If you know of a defense contractor on the Inc. 5000 list, but not listed below, please post a comment or contact me.
